South Sudan

Where We are Working

A 20-year civil war in Sudan created a lack of infrastructure development, major destruction, human rights issues, and a surge of more than four million internally displaced persons and refugees. Decades of strife eventually resulted in a sovereign state, and, and on July 9, 2011 The Republic of South Sudan gained independence, becoming the newest country in the world.

The people of South Sudan are returning home from refugee camps to find their villages destroyed and over-crowded. Fangak County, part of Jonglei Province in South Sudan, has a growing population of 113,000, putting constraints on resources. WellSpring Missions has been focusing its efforts to bring additional clean water sources to the remote village of Old Fangak. For a time only one well served the 5,000 people living in the village. Thanks to the work of Alaska Sudan Medical Project, whom members of WellSpring Missions worked with in February of 2012 to rehab a well and dig a new well in Old Fangak, there are currently four working wells in the village. In order to continue increasing the accessibility of clean water in Old Fangak and surrounding areas, WellSpring Missions is turning it's focus to drilling water wells in neighboring villages.
